The Greater Works Transitional Housing Women’s Shelter is a project with a mission to provide women of Hammond a safe transitional housing alternative, teach a multitude of skills to empower the women to self-sufficiency, and facilitate the possible reunification of clients with their children.
Greater Works Transitional Housing will be a women-only facility. This is of significant value to the clients as it eliminates the possibility of sexual abuse from the opposite sex within the facility.
[Projected for 2013-2014] Greater Works Transitional Housing Center will be a not-for-profit social service agency organization serving the Northwest Indiana region that will provide transitional housing and life skill training for women. It will offer assistance to women, frequently homeless, as they move from dependent, often abusive relationships into independent, self-sufficient lifestyles. Additionally, it will assist clients in child reunification.
This will be one of two of Hammond’s women and children facilities that have long-term transitional housing. Some other shelters only offer short-term housing or less of housing whereas GWTH offers up to two years. On staff will be a chemical dependency counselor, AIDS counselor, and a family reunification counselor to assist clients.
The facility will provide clients with an eight-step program that teaches them necessary life skills as well as a twelve-step program for alcohol/drug addictions. This collaborative approach to empowerment is the keystone to developing self-sufficiency in the clients. The steps include personal development, vocational training, substance abuse counseling, interpersonal skills building, community involvement, leisure activities, and independent living skills.
Pastor Jose Ruiz is the founder and driving force behind the organization, with experience in working with lower-income families and with transitioning employees who were laid-off from the mills. During and since his position as Pastor of Greater Works Transitional Center, Pastor Ruiz has developed a comprehensive network of personal and professional contacts with key community leaders. Pastor Ruiz is currently working on maintaining his organization for helping the greater good of Hammond, Indiana.
Now more than ever, we need your financial support to make this project possible.
